Calm Your Newborn’s Colic and Crying With the Swaddling Technique

By Al Lipper

“This information was taken from the free e-book, “The Parent’s Guide to Calming a Crying Baby.” If you’ve just had a newborn baby, then you may less than thrilled to learn that he or she may have colic. Colic is when your baby just won’t stop crying, and can possibly cry for hours at a time.

If your baby is crying a lot, be certain that you take him or her to the doctor before automatically assuming that it’s just colic. There can be any number of things that can cause your baby to cry, so you certainly want to rule out any health-related problems.

If it is colic, rest assured that it’s not causing any permanent damage to your child. It may sound like they are in intense pain, but this is basically because they respond with loud crying for any pain they are in. Remember, if they have a blanket stuck on their foot, they will cry like the world is coming to an end. This is just what babies do.

AND, remember, IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT! You didn’t do anything wrong to cause this. Here are some tips that work for many parents.

One of the best ways to relieve the constant crying of your newborn suffering from colic is by utilizing an innovative technique known as swaddling. This basically involves wrapping your baby up tightly in a blanket; this has been proven to work quite effectively in parts of the world such as Asia and Africa. You may notice that they usually wrap their babies up tightly and may even carry them around.

Listed below is an easy step-by-step guide to swaddling:

1. Put your baby down on a blanket with his or her arms directly by his or her side.

2. Next, you should wrap your baby up very tightly as if putting him or her in a straight jacket. You need to do this in order to keep his or her arms pinned tightly to his or her sides. Just be certain that he or she is able to breathe freely, but yet still tight enough to allow this to work. Initially, your baby may try to struggle to get free but you need to make certain that he or she keep the arms his or her sides.

3. Finally, you should be certain that the blanket is secure. Do what you have to do to make certain that it is very snug. A good way to do this is with duct tape, even though you may get some funny looks if you’re out in public, but this is guaranteed to do the trick.

This may take a few minutes for your baby to get used to, so you should expect it to take a little while before your baby adjusts to this. Usually, after a very short period of time your baby will be get accustomed to his or her new situation and hopefully you’ll experience the results of swaddling by continuous quietness, rather than crying.

Sling That Baby – Why ‘Baby Wearing’ is a Smart Choice For New Parents

By Nala J.

Baby slings and baby wraps have been in use for hundreds of years, but are receiving new attention thanks to celebrity parents like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Jolie and Pitt have been spotted carrying their newborn twins in baby slings while shopping and dining out. The babies look very happy and calm while their parents look stylish and unique.
What is it about these baby pouches that have made them so popular lately?

Two of the main reasons for recent increases in sling sales are an increase in mobility for the parents and a decrease in crying and general fussing for the infants. With the baby in the sling, parents have both arms free to do chores around the home, get through the grocery store quickly, and even have a nice dinner out – all while cradling their baby in a loving and healthy manner. The babies love being in their wraps because they feel safe and secure right next to their parent’s body and have a nice high vantage point to look around and get maximum visual and audio stimulation. Which would you prefer – being strapped into a rolling cage low to the ground or being right next to your mother’s heart in a beautiful sling made out of soft, luxurious organic fibers?

The slings and wraps are also light and highly versatile – they can go almost anywhere including tight aisles in clothing stores, crowded outdoor marketplaces, and even up and down stairs with no problem. Imagine getting in and out of your SUV without the hassle of unloading the stroller from the back, putting it together, loading up your child, strapping them in, and then closing up the three doors you had to open to get all that done. With a baby sling, you just slip the sling over your shoulder, gently cradle your child inside the soft fabric, get your handbag and go.

Another reason for the huge popularity of baby wraps today is their unrivaled versatility. You can carry your child facing you up near your chest, down on your hip, facing away from you on your belly like a kangaroo, on your back like a backpack, up high on your shoulder, or even in a nursing position. Think about how convenient it would be if you could nurse your child while shopping with both arms free in your local market? Your baby is warm, secure, and eating lunch – all with 100% privacy due to the extra fabric included in his wrap just for this purpose.

If you have not experienced the freedom, comfort, and convenience of a baby wrap you need to order one immediately and put it to use right away. You’ll find yourself lugging around a lot less equipment, your back won’t hurt at the end of the day from stooping and lifting repeatedly, your baby will sleep and eat more while crying less, and you will look fantastic the entire time while wearing your new designer sling.

What to Look For in a Baby Changing Bag

By Mark Thomas Walters

It is surprising just how much stuff a tiny baby needs when you take it out. The essentials that you need not being limited to a blanket, a change of clothes, spare nappies, tissues, wipes, and a toy.

To carry these things you obviously need a bag of some kind, and there are plenty of bags around to suit the purpose, so many in fact that the choice can be overwhelming. So then, how can you be sure of getting a baby bag that completely meets your needs?

It must, of course, be lightweight - that is essential. With the weight of the baby, and even the smallest get heavy after carrying them for a while, and the combined weight of all the odds and ends you ca not do without, the last thing you need is an excessively heavy bag. So, clearly, the lighter, the better. Then, remember that you will be needing this bag for some time to come, so make sure the fabric is tough, and that the bag is sturdy and well-constructed.

A bag that is both washable and waterproof is necessary, so look for ones made out of materials that meet those criteria. Washable because inevitably it will get dirty; there are just too many creams, bottles and dirty nappies around for it stay clean for long. Waterproof because you will get caught out in the rain at some point, and wet baby items and supplies are of no use to you until they have tried out again, and crying babies are not known for their patience!

You will also want a bag that has been well designed so far as pockets go. While this might seem to be overly specific, it really does make a difference. It should have all of the following: lots of pockets (so that items do not get mixed up); some large pockets (because changing mats and nappies take up a lot of space); sealable pockets (to prevent items falling out, or rain getting in).

Once you have identified the basic necessities, you might want to consider some more sophisticated features, such as whether the bag has see-through linings to make it easier to find things in a rush, or whether there is an insulated bottle carrier.

Then, there is the overall design of the bag. Whether you opt for a rucksack, holdall, or satchel style bad is really down to personal preference, though you do need to bear in mind that some put extra pressure on certain points of your body, and some are easier to put on a push-chair than others.

Finally, there is price and style to consider. Price wise, you are looking at anywhere from $10 for a second-hand one from eBay, to hundreds of dollars for a brand name designer one. So far as style goes, keep in mind that you will have the same bag to take with you whatever the occasion, so, whilst a bright pink one may look cute in the store, you might feel a bit out of place with it in a nice restaurant. Going for a plain white or black one might be the way to go.

Top Rated Baby Strollers For 2010 – Best New Baby Stroller Qualities to Look For

By James J Clarkson

If you are looking for a top rated baby stroller in 2010 there are many options available to you. From Baby Jogger to Bugaboo to Silver cross, your options are almost limitless with the many brands and varieties available. Your baby deserves the best, and a good combination of quality, price, durability and compatibility is what you should be looking for.

A key quality to look for in a top rated baby stroller is the size of the tires. The classic three or four inch tires can be practical in shopping malls and areas with level ground, but when it comes to off-roading, snow and ice, they leave a lot to be desired. They can easily become stuck in ruts and become difficult to maneuver. A more practical option is the eight inch in diameter or larger inflatable bicycle-style tires. For the three wheeler strollers, a lockable front tire is a great option to help with rough terrain.

Another good quality to look for in top rated baby strollers is convertibility to a car seat. If you have a newborn, there are many strollers that have a car seat that will click right into the car, and into the stroller. This saves the added expense of buying two separate units. When your baby outgrows the car seat, this style of stroller is usually ready for a full sized toddler without the car seat attachment.

You should also be concerned with how easily your top rated baby stroller can be collapsed. Are you driving a compact car, an SUV or a minivan? Depending on the variety of stroller you purchase and how well it collapses for storage, it may be difficult for you to fit it in your current vehicle.

Are you planning to have more than one child, or do you already? Multiple child strollers are readily available in today’s marketplace. If you have two children, three, or even four, there is a top rated baby stroller available to suit your need. If you only have one child now, but plan on having another, you may want to purchase a double stroller now, planning for the future. There are many double strollers on the market that are convertible to single. This helps by giving you the aesthetics of a single stroller, while preparing for the future of multiple children.

Now that you are getting closer to purchasing your top rated stroller, you should make sure that it is comfortable for you to use. If the bar you use to push the stroller is too low, you may have to hunch over to push it, giving you back problems in the long run. Also check out the grips to feel if they are comfortable for your hands. You are going to be using the stroller for years to come, so you want to make sure it is perfect for you.

With the many strollers available, the on you purchase is not an easy decision. Make sure you take your time and examine all the options before making a decision.
